(10 Oct 2018) The President of Chile said on Wednesday that his country was under no obligation to negotiate with Bolivia with regard to granting access to the Pacific Ocean. Sebastian Pinera was addressing a news conference in Berlin alongside German Chancellor Angela Merkel. The United Nations’ highest court rejected landlocked Bolivia’s bid to force Chile to the negotiating table over granting access to the Pacific Ocean early last week. Pinera said he had not yet received any letter from Bolivian President Evo Morales with regard to the verdict. In a sweeping rejection of the Bolivian case the International court in The Hague, by a 12-3 majority, dismissed eight different legal arguments presented by Bolivia’s lawyers.
