Tiwanaku is a ruined ancient city near Lake Titicaca in western Bolivia. Controling the ruins, as soon as the seat of the pre-Columbian Tiwanaku culture, are the Akapana pyramid and also a semi-subterranean temple with sculpted pictures of human heads. Nearby Kalasasaya is an open temple with rock monoliths as well as the huge Gateway of the Sun arc. The Museo del Sitio de Tiwanaku shows artefacts excavated from the site.
